The Olympics

Before long the Olympic Games shall be upon us, an event which has taken place for more than 100 years. Still the history of when it actually started goes way beyond 100 years. In early Greece which was were it began the Olympic Games started out as being a series of competitions held between representatives of numerous states and kingdoms from Ancient Greece, it had been mainly athletic but it has also combat and chariot racing events. Its ironic that the while the Olympic games was taking place, all disputes against the participating cities were being called off until the end of the games.

The Olympic Games are a significant worldwide event that includes summer and winter sports, by which 1000s of athletes take part in a variety of contests. The Games are presently held every two years, meaning that the Summer and Winter Olympic Games interchange, so every four years there is a main event within their respective season. Originally, the traditional Olympic Games were held in a place known as Olympia, which is in Greece, from about the eighth century BC to fifth century AD. A man named Baron Pierre de Coubertin established what is known as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) while in the year 1894. The IOC has ever since then become a governing body for the Olympic Movement, whose formation and actions are defined by the Olympic Charter.

Whether you prefer the modern Summer or Winter Olympics, Paralympics or the youth games, the Olympics is an event for all regardless of its history and reputation, with a number of participants in the hundreds there is always something to see and watch.
